Aquathlon World Championships, 1 May 2023

8 days post-marathon, I had absolutely no expectations for this one. I was here for a bit of fun (and the holiday to Ibiza)! It was nice to go into a competition like this with no pressure at all and to just soak up the atmosphere. I spent the days leading up to the race indulging in 4 course breakfasts and dinners at our hotel, obviously perfect race prep; who needs chicken and rice?!

The race went okay and although my body wasn't quite at its full strength, it was a useful exercise in multisport racing after 8 months of running that I took home a lot from. Firstly, it was a reminder at competitive open water swimming. Actually, open water swimming at all, since it had been 8 months since I last did that as well! I'd forgotten about how spicy the swim in events at this level could be, with everyone of similar ability fighting for space. I went off hard with the group and it was impossible to get into any sort of rhythm for at least 400m until the pack eventually started to break down. I somehow missed the opportunity to draft and it ended up being a solo effort and consequently I don't feel my time reflected the progress I've made in swimming over the winter. Plenty to take away from the swim experience and I'll definitely be doing more smaller events this season to develop my skills again.

I exited the water about mid pack and was happy with my quick transition. I moved surprisingly well on the run and worked my way through the field, gaining 4 places. It was by no means a fast run for me, but it was nice to know that even on tired legs I was still competitive. Promising for the season ahead! A good day out, I'm very lucky to be able to enter the world champs "for a bit of fun". I treated myself to 5 courses at dinner to celebrate.
